Welcome to The Compton Arms. A pub and ale house has been situated on this lovely Islington backstreet, Compton Avenue since the mid 16th Century. Long may it continue!
The Compton Arms is more famously known as one of former patron George Orwell’s three Canonbury pubs, chosen as inspiration for his perfect watering hole essay, The Moon Under Water.
Our tribute to the great man is a feature on our coat of arms, along with legendary local Arsenal and England Cricket siblings, Denis & Lesley Compton.
What can I expect from the Compton Arms?
We like to think that of The Compton Arms as a contemporary country pub, hidden in north London. A bolt-hole if you will, from the hectic surroundings of upper street.
We are now a Free House, so after a former incarnation as a managed Greene King pub, our beverage selection is more varied and interesting these days.
We keep our ales and beers in the very best condition and buy modern brews and traditional classics as locally as possible. Cocktails and wines have also been given a lease of life in this formally pint heavy haven. As booze snobs ourselves it’s important that we have new and rotated things to drink with you..
The Kitchen serves daily from 6pm Tuesday to Friday and 1pm Saturday & Sunday
Four Legs is a new chef duo from London. With a focus on fresh, seasonal produce, the team are cooking a daily changing menu with a couple of favorites staying fairly consistent throughout the seasons. Plates are small and medium, designed with sharing in mind.
SPORT ON THE SCREENS
The Compton is, and will always be an Arsenal Pub.
Busy with a loyal set of fans both before and after home games. Being lovers of the beautiful game ourselves, we have embraced the viewing of football with our own unique take.
Televised sport can divide crowds, so we have decided to do it as properly as we can. We have both Sky and BT channels available.
Sport at the Compton is as classy affair as we can muster. No banners, no projectors but several HD screens in unobtrusive places. We always provide a football free area when a match is on, and have areas with sound and without. If you want a section to watch a game, the atmosphere is hard to beat, whilst also offering somewhere tranquil at the same time for those here for a quiet pint. .
We also have bright outside space with speakers for the games – great to relax, and amazing to watch the match with a cold pint or cocktail.
